The longer Jeff Saturday is in it, the more likely he is to win it

When he shocked the NFL world and made Jeff Saturday the team’s interim head coach, there was a clear vibe within Colts owner Jim Irsay that he had already unofficially decided to give the post-season job to Saturday. That didn’t stop a slew of candidates from applying for the job.

And so Irsay is apparently using the process to legitimize the unofficial decision to take Saturday. The longer Saturday stays in the mix, the more likely he is to get the job.

That’s the big takeaway from the news getting a second interview on Saturday. He’s in it. And he very well could win it.

Some think it comes down to Saturday and Chiefs Offensive Coordinator Eric Bieniemy. It is ultimately Irsay’s decision. If he wants to hire someone who hasn’t even gotten an interview with any of the other four teams looking for head coaches, that’s on him.

And in the end it comes down to business. Even as the Colts broke up as the show ran on Saturday, people filled the stadium. That gives Irsay the opportunity to gain practical experience on Saturday to make up for the experience he necessarily lacked – before gaining eight games of practical experience to close out the 2022 season.
