Jeremy Renner was crushed by a snowplow as he tried to save his nephew from injury, sheriff’s report says

Actor Jeremy Renner was trying to keep his snow removal tractor from slipping and hitting his adult nephew when he was pulled under the vehicle and crushed on New Year’s Day, according to an incident report from a Nevada sheriff.

The parking brake was not engaged and is believed to have stopped the snowcat vehicle, which is driving on a track, when it started sliding sideways after the 52-year-old “Avengers” star used it to pull his cousin’s truck out of the snow, according to the Redacted Washoe County Sheriff’s Office report, filed Friday.

“The Pistenbully snowplow began to slide, causing Renner to get out of the vehicle without using the emergency brake,” the report concludes, which CNN obtained Tuesday through a request for public records.

“Although the Pistenbully had some mechanical issues, based on our mechanical inspection, it is believed that the parking brake would prevent the Pistenbully from moving forward. When Renner attempted to stop or divert the Pistenbully to avoid injury to (his nephew), he was pulled under the vehicle by the track and run over.

The brake check light in the snowcat’s cab did not work and “mechanical problems may have played a role in this accident,” the report also notes.

The nephew was able to help Renner until help arrived, the report said. Renner was airlifted to hospital, where he stayed for more than two weeks, had at least two surgeries and was treated in intensive care.

Impairment was not believed to be a factor in the incident, the report concludes. CNN has reached out to Renner’s representatives for comment.

The incident began on New Year’s Day, when Renner dragged his cousin’s truck out of the actor’s driveway after it got stuck in the snow, he told investigators on Jan. 5 while he was in the hospital, according to the incident report.

After the truck was towed onto the street, the snowplow “started sliding sideways” and “started rolling down the hill,” Renner said. At that point, Renner jumped out of the snow cat, he told investigators.

“Once he got off the Pistenbully, he realized it was going straight to[his cousin],” the report reads. “He was afraid the Pistenbully would hit (his cousin), so he decided to try to stop or divert the Pistenbully.”

To enter the snowplow’s cab, Renner had to climb onto the moving lane and was “immediately pulled under the left lane,” the report notes.

Renner was “completely crushed under a large snowcat (vehicle)” and had “extreme (difficulty) breathing,” with “the right side of his chest … collapsed – upper body crushed,” according to a 911 call log obtained by CNN.

“The Pistenbully rolled over him and continued on his way,” the report says. “He lay down on the floor and concentrated on his breathing while (his cousin and others) helped him until medical personnel arrived at the scene.”

Renner, who plays the superhero archer Hawkeye in the Marvel movie and TV “Universe,” broke more than 30 bones in the incident, he said.

He posted a photo to Instagram last week with a caption that read, “Morning workouts, New Year’s resolutions have all changed this particular New Year…. Born from a tragedy for my entire family, and quickly focused on reuniting actionable love ❤️ I want to THANK EVERYONE for their messages and thoughtfulness to my family and me…. Much love and appreciation to you all. These 30+ broken bones will mend, grow stronger, just as the love and bond with family and friends deepens. Love and blessings to you all.”
